For my birthday we raised funds to support Autumn and Beverly Harry’s event Journey of a Water Protector, held on the @pyramid_lake Reservation. @numu_wanderer and @cornmush_girl built this event and site as a base for creative and critical thinking to protect land, air, and water while sharing its cultural and spiritual message to attendees. This work protects the Cui-ui (Kooyooe) and the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (Agi) 🐟 They feel this base is their innovative center to building leaders and to continue to share Norm Harry’s legacy. They continually build on the foundation from the year before and add new construction to eliminate costs of renting canopies and buying shelters. They recycle and improve on sustainable additions. I pay 1% of my salary to Autumn since I work and live on her and her people’s land. I also often drive 77.5 miles through the Reservation from Reno to my job. This was special as it was the in-person version of our 2021 $6.5K Zoom birthday fundraiser. We supported gardens, local food, and planter boxes for elders. We had books and magazines about their work and they shared about their work. They are land and water protectors, role models, and @lagi_poweredbyart @fly_ranch design challenge jurors. Beverly’s birthday is Feb. 4th, which we also celebrated 🎉 Autumn is Numu (Northern Paiute) on her paternal side and Diné (Navajo) on her maternal side. She is a member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. Her late father, Norm Harry, was a respected water protector, leader, and Tribal Chair at Pyramid Lake. He taught that “What is good for the fish, is good for the people.” Pyramid is a 188 square mile lake within the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe’s 742 square mile Reservation. The Tribe is a sovereign nation with 15,000+ years of stewardship and 3,000+ enrolled members who manage land, water, and governance. I turned 39. I feel lucky and grateful to a have a spectacular fiancée, wonderful friends and family, and a feeling of home. This has also been a painful, sad, and difficult year, and generally a hard six since the pandemic. I’ve had a lingering wrist injury from when I was a kid. A stomach virus from November has impacted me in difficult and painful ways (hence peanut butter and banana for my birthday). I’ve found and find joy, meaning, and purpose in friendships, dancing, nature, and meaningful work. My birthday party felt so special because it combined all of those. Thank you to everyone who called, texted, and wished me a happy birthday; donated to @numu_wanderer @cornmush_girl; came to my bday; and has been part of my life and journey 🙏 🖖 photos by @nazlebeurre 🫶

Dads @keithleetun & Paul were elders & deacons at our ⛪ Brothers @jackl.512 & @lukesundquist , & sisters, @anna_sundquist & @janeleetun are childhood friends. My mom taught Joni to swim when she was four. Anna’s handprint is in Joni’s attic. Joni met my grandma Dorothy as a kid. Her dad and brother stayed with my papa Eddie. 📖 Joni’s only early memory of me is an unruly outfit I wore while we were Vacation Bible School counselors in ‘04. I’m seven years older and didn’t know her. She Friended me when she was in college. We messaged & met for brunch in DC in 2014. We became friends while she was in college, LA, & Europe. 💫 In 2020, we started to explore a connection. I visited her in a group home Memorial Day Weekend, which we count as our anniversary. Amid broader fears & uncertainty, we found love & comfort. 🔒 Two years ago, we decided to be together forever. She gave me her bracelet from a 2005 Arlington Ceremony in honor of her grandfather. My family was there that day. I gave her an initialed bracelet my papa made me. 🎨 We are grateful to @chriddyp @decibel._ @brennamorgan @rymodi & @palette.sf fam. Thanks to @joshsundquist for traveling (& @unabashedly🫶🙏), & 120+ friends who kept a secret, celebrated that night, and in the time since. 🕊️ It’s felt like an invisible thread pulling us together. The moment Joni said yes, my forehead, eyebrows, and neck unclenched in the most incredible way 😌 My face unfroze from months of deadpan reactions. I’d planned to propose for a while. She’s the love of my life—stunning, brilliant, competent, inherently good, and hilarious. We had separately floated the idea of a joint 🎂 to @chriddyp @decibel._ @brennamorgan @rymodi . The perfect diversion. A fun V-Day & bday @palette.sf even if the proposal didn’t work out. Joni wanted a surprise. I do whatever she wants (happy wife, happy life). But she’s hard to surprise. My plan was to tell only team Palette and @m0llzy . But then... I just got so excited. I told some friends & family who had RSVPed on @partiful or responded with interest to my Palette IG invite story. Two weeks before, Joni asked me directly if I was going to propose at Palette. I had prepared for it and responded, incredulously, “At Palette? Do you want that?” She said she wanted me to do it when I wanted (which I already knew). I said, “🇯🇵 in October!” And then—an absolutely legendary Palette. Cozy house party vibes 🍫❤️‍🔥, vibrant and friendly, spectacular danceable music. I practiced 🧎🫴💍 to @taylorswift lyrics every night for weeks. I felt the collective love in the room 🫶 Her surprise & joy were everything. Her first words after yes: “You got me” 🥰 My sleep this past week has been deep and integrative. The outpouring of love and support has been unreal. I realized during our Harvard Class of 2009 15 Year Reunion that I hadn’t processed our time as students or accepted that it ended. Staying in @pfoho ; running into everyone from @matherhouse & @harvardweld ; 🕺 in the yard—it was so familiar & easy. Amazing vibes & energy. Like an intimate, casual, loving festival we put on for each other. Like coming home 🏡 📕 In our 15th Reunion Red Book I noted my rigidity & fears that I’m evil & not lovable. It was an unreal healing when dozens of y’all opened with that you think I’m good & love me 🥺 🥰After hundreds of hugs & 🕺 in the yard (when this 📸 was taken) I cried a lot Saturday. Until then I’d had parts that felt detached & complicated about college 🥴 😌I felt an incredible release & 🌊 of joy. I felt pre-covid joy & hope I’d thought I’d never get back. Since then I’ve felt uncomplicated gratitude & love for my college experience, y’all, & our time together ♾️ I wish I had hundreds more 📸 & so much more time. I started 🧗 again last year after three years off. @jonileetun started for the first time, initially to support me 🥰. She has quickly become an excellent climber & does V4s 💪. I’ve done some V6s & a V7. While I don’t 🏋️ because of my deep respect for gravity, climbing is such a fun way to work out. It feels like a zen flow activity. I automatically pay attention & feel present. I feel happier. It pairs wonderfully with yoga. I’m grateful that I get to climb with people who coach & encourage me.
